2013 Christmas Poem

2013 Christmas Poem

Heading into the wind I stroll the beach
and pick up the occasional sea shell
that’s not been bleached or broken,
bringing it home to my granddaughter who
lives mid-continent, but loves the ocean.
I have shells enough from other vacation strolls,
and so I search the sea for a black back
gliding in and out of gentle waves, curved
up and then down, breathing, playing,
searching for fish to eat—
I see no dolphins today, so I hum to them—
Have a holly, jolly Christmas this year—
They don’t like that song. I sing,
Feliz Navidad, thinking they may
have escaped from Cuba.
No luck. I sing a song to myself,
Away in a Manger, no crib for a bed,
and I find I have changed
the words in the third verse,
which now comes out—
Be near me Lord Jesus I ask Thee to stay
close by me forever and love me I pray.
Bless all the dear creatures in thy tender careand keep them safe always
on earth, sea and air.
A dolphin appears in the blue shining waters, her bottle nose turned toward me,
then others too break the surface
gliding up and down
parallel to the beach.

singing, humming, diving, walking
in this paradise of peace, this Kingdom of God where a baby, born among the animals,  brings the Good News to us all
